Wang Hong (汪 洪 )

Wang Hong is a renowned multi-instrumentalist and expert on Asian musical instruments, possessing mastery over approximately 40 different instruments. His deep knowledge and passion for preserving musical heritage make him an invaluable asset to DGEM’s mission. Hong’s career has spanned diverse musical landscapes, from collaborating with composers on scores for animated series like The Legend of Korra and Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomenessto working closely with James Cameron as his go-to expert on Asian musical instruments for the Avatar films. His contributions to Avatar included composing and performing on a variety of Asian instruments, even overseeing the Asian musical elements for the film’s concert performances, showcasing his ability to bridge cultures through music.

Hong’s musical journey began at Nanjing Normal University’s Music Department, where he honed his skills in erhu, composition, and oboe. He furthered his musical exploration at the Nanjing Arts Academy, studying oboe, and later taught songwriting and oboe at the music department for approximately five years. His eight-year immersion in the study of traditional songs and folk music at the Jiangsu Province Institute of Arts solidified his expertise in preserving and understanding musical traditions. This deep understanding of musical history and cultural context is crucial to DGEM’s mission of documenting and archiving global musical traditions.

As a highly sought-after performer, Hong has graced international music festivals across the globe, collaborating with esteemed musicians like Meredith Monk, Tan Dun, and Zhao Jiping. His performances have ranged from intimate collaborations with jazz musicians like Max Roach and David Murray to world premieres of contemporary operas like Guo Wenjing’s Feng Yi Ting at prestigious venues such as the Spoleto Festival and Lincoln Center. His role as a “musical archaeologist,” seeking out and learning from folk master musicians in mainland China, reflects his commitment to preserving authentic musical practices and aligns perfectly with DGEM’s focus on documenting and celebrating diverse musical cultures.

Hong’s expertise extends beyond performance and composition. As a Special Researcher for the China Conservatory of Music’s Oriental Music Research Institute, he actively promotes new music from Asian American composers, demonstrating his dedication to fostering innovation and cross-cultural dialogue within the music world. His extensive experience working with film composers on documentaries, movies, and TV series, including recordings for DreamWorks productions, showcases his versatility and adaptability. As a DGEM partner and active board member, Hong collaborates with musicologist Damaris Morales to capture and preserve global musical traditions through audio and visual documentation. His profound understanding of Asian musical instruments, coupled with his passion for music education, makes him an essential contributor to DGEM’s efforts to create accessible and culturally rich learning resources for individuals and institutions worldwide.
